Are You Tired Enough To Make Daft Decisions?

Trigger Question #29:

Do you know that working long hours with little sleep reduces your performance? Of course you do. But did you know that, like drunks, the sleep-deprived do not realize that they are making decisions that no person in her (sorry, his) right mind would make?

Like the decision not to take a vacation.

If you think that by vacation I mean going away from home for a few days, then read on. A vacation can happen almost anywhere because it is simply an extended period of rest and recreation. Note “extended” is longer than a nap.

Now tell me, what are your vacation plans? What! Only taking a couple of days off? Surely not. It takes at least three days just to unwind.

Never mind, you’re not alone. American workers take fewer vacations than people in nearly every industrial nation. (I assume the old survey I read still applies. I’m too tired to do an on-line search for an update.)

Like all odd behaviors, taking fewer vacations has a name. It’s called shrinking-vacation syndrome.

If you ask me, it’s the shrinking self-confidence syndrome. Do you really think your job will disappear if you disappear for two weeks? (Apparently yes, if you live and work in the USA, because it could.)

It’s nonsense that you can’t leave your job for a well-earned rest. And it’s plain stupid not to recognize the need to recharge your batteries. Even your smart phone is smart enough to know that!

But apparently some bosses in the USA aren’t smart enough. They still prefer their employees to be tired, unproductive and making daft decisions.

Welcome to my side of the nonsense divide.
