Bliss in Hand Is Worth Two Hopes in the Mud

Insight #57

“Thanks for the reminder, Bliss, but did you have to be so forceful?” (Created with Microsoft Copilot)

. . .

Once upon a time, my daughter went for Hope and got kicked by Bliss.

This is not a fairy tale. It really happened. Not even names have been changed.

At the time of this once-upon-a-time, my daughter was a volunteer at a horse rescue shelter. Here, nice people care for abused horses, horses that were rescued from not so nice humans. One day, as she walked toward a new arrival called Hope, she moved past a horse named Bliss. Bliss took offense to the attention Hope was getting and kicked my daughter, who landed in the mud.

Ouch! Kicked by Bliss going for Hope.

This got me thinking. How often don’t we make the same mistake! We look to Hope to save us when Bliss is right here, demanding our attention. We count on hope for a better future and we ignore bliss in the present.

Then we act surprised when we land in the mud of the moment.

From now on, I will lavish attention on bliss right here and let hope take care of herself. As they say in the classics, bliss in hand is worth two hopes in the mud.

Welcome to my side of the nonsense divide.
